Diaspora is a privacy-aware, distributed, open source social network developed by the Diaspora Foundation. The social network is built up of distributed pods, that can be self-hosted by anyone. However, to join the Dispora, you can simply chose an already hosted pod on the network. Members can share and discuss content with others, and label content with hashtags, allowing them to easily follow certain topics that they are interested in. Diaspora also supports @mentions and re-shares of posts, features which all adds up to an intricate communication and sharing system, distributed across the globe.

Plurk is a micro-blogging social network that allow you to share short messages, links, videos and everything else with your friends. Much like Twitter, Plurk is capped out at 360 text characters per post. Each user of Plurk get's a profile page and a timeline, which lists all the updates received in chronological order, and delivered to other users who have chosen to receive them follow the creator.

Friendica is a free and open-source software decentralized social network. With Friendica you can host your own server with a unique domain while being part of the Friendica fediverse of federated services. You can also join one of the already hosted and managed servers as with any other social network. The main difference with Friendica and more common social networks like Facebook, Twitter or Instagram is the distributed nature of the software and it's use built-in support for ActivityPub. Allowing you not only to connect to a plethora of Friendica servers but also connect with other ActivityPub-protocol powered social networks like Funkwhale, Hubzilla, Mastodon, Pleroma, Pixelfed and GNU Social.

An ethical social network for a brighter tomorrow. Okuna launched on the scene in 2018 with a Kickstarter campaign under the name Openbook, where they succeeded to raise over $50,000. The goal of the project is to build a free and open source social media platform that respects user privacy. Okuna is still in closed beta and provides registration via invites only.

A multimedia messaging app for sharing special moments with friends and family. The Snapchat application opens right to the camera so that you are ready to record and send a snap in seconds. Snapchat also provides filters, lenses, bitmojis and other fun stuff to enhance your snap and allows you to express your self more. Each snap can be sent to a select group of friends, and is deleted as soon as they have watched it.
