Tumblr is a an easy to use microblogging site and social network first released in 2007. On Tumblr, people can share stories via blogs and other media such as photos, GIFs, links and third party platform embeds such as Spotify playlist and tracks. All users of Tumblr can follow each other to get up-to-date content from the creators you live. There is also private publishing features which allow you to share your stories only to a select group or community. Over 500 milion people use Tumblr to share contet on the web for free.

GNU social connects you to a free network of thousands of communities that discuss daily on a variety of topics, each being part of the whole. GNU social supports both single-user and community modes and can be used in an intranet environment or as part of the wider open network. The free and open source microblogging server is written in PHP and built on-top of the OStatus standard for inter-operation between installations.

Diaspora is a privacy-aware, distributed, open source social network developed by the Diaspora Foundation. The social network is built up of distributed pods, that can be self-hosted by anyone. However, to join the Dispora, you can simply chose an already hosted pod on the network. Members can share and discuss content with others, and label content with hashtags, allowing them to easily follow certain topics that they are interested in. Diaspora also supports @mentions and re-shares of posts, features which all adds up to an intricate communication and sharing system, distributed across the globe.

An ethical social network for a brighter tomorrow. Okuna launched on the scene in 2018 with a Kickstarter campaign under the name Openbook, where they succeeded to raise over $50,000. The goal of the project is to build a free and open source social media platform that respects user privacy. Okuna is still in closed beta and provides registration via invites only.
