It was created by GNU Project founder Richard Stallman and has been dubbed "the most powerful text editor available today". At the core of GNU Emacs is an interpreter for Emacs Lisp, a dialect of the Lisp programming language with extensions to support text editing. Which allows users to extend and customize GNU Emacs to their heart's content.
